Different chains.
A chain is a series of connected links. In Fantastic Contraption, chains can be made with either water rods or wood rods. Chains can be used as belts where they wrap around wheels or as ropes to keep an object on a leash. In addition, because chains in the game exhibit a form of elasticity, they act as a form of springs.

[edit] Uses

[edit] Belt

A belt.
A belt.
A belt can be used as a power transmission mechanism or as a conveyor belt. Belts should be as tight as possible to maximize their efficiency.

Belts do not create a great power transmission mechanism because of the tendency for the chain to slip. It is impossible to create a taut belt because the game provides no adjustment of an object's tension (or any form of stress on objects themselves). They can be used for moving objects from point A to point B, however. Even then, belts consume a lot of rods, and there are likely better ways to move objects. However, belts can be fun when attempting to creatively solve a level.

[edit] Pulley

A chain can be used in a pulley system.

[edit] Track

For traversing uneven ground, especially when littered with non-static objects, tracks come into use. Tracks should be taut as possible, however, loose tracks are not a large problem.

[edit] Rope

Given the lack of a rope in the game, a chain supplants this missing part. Chain links should not be too short otherwise the chain may break.

[edit] Properties

[edit] Chain link length

Shorter link lengths will more easily detach at their joints and pass through other objects, but their motion will be more fluid.

[edit] Elasticity

Elasticity.
Elasticity.
Elasticity is the ability of a body to reversibly deform. Chains exhibit higher elasticity when their individual chain links are shorter. With longer chain links, chains will be less susceptible to stretching.

Too much stress will cause a chain to break where individual chain links will disconnect at their joints.

[edit] Building a chain

Connecting multiple rods will create a chain. Chain links can be shortened after they have been created and joined.
