Fantastic Wiki:Workshop
From Fantastic Wiki
This workshop is a place for contraptioneers to get together to talk about this Fantastic Contraption Wiki site. It is intended as a place to propose and discuss changes and improvements to the wiki itself; policies, page ideas, conventions, 'should I do this?' etc are all suitable topics. Specific page discussions should occur on the relevant page's discussion page, design discussion should occur on the forum.
Conventions for this page
Please start a new section with a "== Level 2 heading==" at the bottom of the page.
Please post the original section text as normal text.
Please add comments / replies at the relevant point in the disucssion using list format "*Reply to original", "**Reply to reply" etc. Note that if a blank line is left between elements of a list, this wiki appears to add empty bullet lines, so it is, sadly, preferred to not leave blank lines.
Please sign and date all your posts using "~~~~" at the end of your contribution.
Please do not materially edit other people's posts. Rather add a note at the next reply level below it. If you change your mind about a post you have made, rather than deleting it, which may make the flow of replies strange to read, just surround your post with "<strike> ...old post... </strike>".
Please do not include any links in a heading. Rather put a link in the section text after it.
When this page gets too large and/or as time passes discussions will be archived. It is intended that they be kept in perpetuity.

[edit] Icons
I mentioned this on the forum a while back, but if anyone has graphics skills and could improve some icons that would be good. See badges where there are several 16px by 16px images enlarged to 50px by 50px and they look bad. Icons want to be viewable at both 50px and 16px (or have two variants at different sizes). Additonally some new icons representing "Fastest", "Slowest", "Fewest" would be good. Anyone with such skill? -- Meconopsis 08:40, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- Additionally, I was wondering if we wanted to have two icons to distinguish between unpowered (green) rodless designs and powered rodless designs. ...? -- Meconopsis 08:45, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- Icons needed:
Water (50px)
Rodless (50px)
Sweep (50px)
Handsoff (50px)
Badgeless (50px)
Unconnected (50px)
Is Pilot too small?Fastest (50px & 16px) - Not lightning. Try Arrow with speed air waves or Hare or speedometer at max???Slowest (50px & 16px) - Snail or tortoise or speedometer at 0Fewest (50px & 16px) - No ideaPowered rodless (50px & 16px) - as rodless but in yellow and/or pink?
-- Meconopsis 09:46, 21 July 2009 (UTC) - Perhaps get the original pilot icon, used in comps which is a P in blue box. Fewest pieces could be just a picture of tools, or a tool box that's full or something. I've made a mock for the powered rodless, in 50px and 16px, I'm not too good at photoshop.

- I like the PowRodless idea. -- Meconopsis 19:10, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- I've started using

for fastest, slowest and fewest. -- Meconopsis 10:21, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome
Tes has done a welcome template (see below). In my opinion this is the wrong type of welcome message: It is very big (takes up most of the screen); is not personalised - it isn't a welocme from an existing user; is full of stuff that duplicates the main screen; it doesn't actually come across as a welcome - just as being hit by a rule book. I would prefer a simple signed textual two liner without graphics and a SINGLE link to somewhere that all the other information can be obtained. If made into a template, I would also prefer it to be a 'subst' rather than a 'template'. If this was placed on my talk page, the first thing I would do would be to delete it. Thoughts please folk. -- Meconopsis 07:51, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I agree that is huge, perhaps we can use all the special code to put their username in, because that would personalise it. I don't know if his intention is for weird users or for everybody, because if it is for everybody, it definately needs to be shrunk, otherwise, like you said, you are just throwing the rule book at them. -- Skips 17:55, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- I (Meconopsis) would prefer something along the lines of:
"
Welcome to the Fantastic Wiki. Feel free to edit articles to improve their content on the Fantastic Contraption game. We have guides that we hope will help you. Please do not write about other topics. Thanks. -- Meconopsis 21:29, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
"
where guides links to something with all the info from Tes' template. -- Meconopsis 21:29, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Do you like what I did with the template?I deleted the template you posted above and will put an example down below.--tes753 22:45, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Welcome, tes753, to the Fantastic Contraption Wiki. Please feel free to improve it. If you feel lost, please check out our site map. If you need any more help, just post on the Workshop. Remember to stay on topic and 'remain chill'. -- Skips
- Hope this is what you wanted!
[edit] Official Levels 22-44
With these levels, there are a lot less records than for the orignial 21 levels, so does a full scale table with every possibility fit their wiki pages? I started by editing Pit & Pendulum, just because the layout was atrocious. So should we edit the rest to look like this, or stick with continuity of the previous levels and add the huge table which will mostly be empty? I've also edited Chimi, but that was mostly deleting stuff. -- Skips 19:03, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- I say that the level template used on levels 1-21 should be carried over to levels 22-42 to create a uniform look throughout the wiki. I do agree that the table might be quiet empty on most of those levels.--tes753 22:38, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- I suggest the able from 1-21, in general, for all levels since obver the years the entries may be found and it would be consistent. -- Meconopsis 22:42, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Level/design image names
I think that we should have a universal way of naming level and design images from the FCR so it will be easier for users to find an image. Basically, it would work like this:
- LevelID 299 [[Image:level-299]]
- DesignID 6599 [[Image:design-6599]]
I have already implemented this method with the featured level of the week levels and will try to move all other images to the same style. Comments and ideas are welcome.--tes753 00:13, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
