[edit] Complex Catapults

This article is part of the Advanced Brown Guide. It is about the complex catapults that are used in many of the harder levels.

[edit] Flex Underpults

These of are my own design, can prove very useful for longways or any level that you need to catapult a ball under a level.

Educational Video a big thanks to Portgoose for the video.

  1. Add weight. adjust it for speed and power. [1]
  2. Build the first section of the frame. simply an "X" with the top and bottom ends attached [2]
  3. Build the second section of the frame. attach an box-like arm in the way shown, there is a example above the frame [3]
  4. Add the catapult, make the "Basket" for the Goal piece slightly smaller than the circumference of the Goal piece, so it doesn't fall through until the stretch of the joints lets it pass through, This is a key part of the contraption. [4]
  5. Alternative final step: connect the two joints in the way shown, this is a simpler version and has a wider trajectory, but takes longer to tweak. [5] If you choose not to take this alternative, skip to step 5.
  6. Build the final part of the frame. [6]
  7. Add a poker so the catapult doesn't come backwards toward toward the Build area. [7] Alternatively, you can add a counterweight instead of a poker, this way there is no poker you have to worry about getting in the way. although, if you do it right, the poker won't get in the way anyway [8]
  8. Add the chain, this determines when the catapult will start to throw the ball, (adjust for distance) Pay close attention to where you attach the chain to, it gets hard to see the joints here. [9]

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • Poker phases through the catapult arm before it does its job.
    • There are two solutions to this problem. The first possibility is you can remove the poker completely and make a counterweight as said before. The second way is to add more wood rods on the poker.
  • Poker phases through the catapult AFTER it does its job.
    • You shouldn't be complaining about this unless you really dislike phasing. The only way that i know is to make the compartment for the goal piece a little larger, to make room for the poker to move around.

[edit] Push-pops

Credit to RLbabits for the concept. This is basically a pop-a-pult on the end of an arm, I haven't used it myself but it looks quite promising. it is a bit piece consuming when it comes to weights though. This involves lifting a "popper" up, bracing it against a ledge, and catapulting a goal piece from there.

  1. add 2 weights, make them both pretty heavy, (20-ish sticks each)
  2. Build the standard X-frame with the top and bottoms ends attached. [21] Make sure one of the slanted rods is a wood rod, so the weight can press down on it.
  3. Add a long triangle to the side of the X-frame opposite of the wood rod. This acts as your catapult so again, make sure one of them is a wood rod. [22]
  4. attach a chain from the middle of the triangle from step 3 to the second weight. Then add whatever other contraptions you need to solve the level. Its a good idea to make the first link of the chain coming off of the triangle very long, so you can brace it on the ground, like in the example [23]

[edit] Troubleshooting

1: Its not catapulting far enough.. A: If you adjust the center vertex on the "popper" away from the goal piece, it should have a stronger pop. You can also add weight in addition to this.

2: I can't get the popper triangle up on the ledge.. A: See my hint in the final step. REMEMBER THE HINTS.

[edit] Centrifugal Underpults

Authored by IGLima. This type of contraption was first created by ~Jon~, and can function like flex underpults above, but are simpler and can fling at a steeper angle. The way these work is by having an inverted catapult arm, and a triangle pivot on the ground to kick them over the ledge, after that the weight takes over and catapults it.

Tutorial Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVK0rFHimTc By IGLima

  1. Add a weight, anywhere from 20 to 40 sticks depending on how far/high you need to launch the goal piece.
  2. Build a frame to fit your need. Either brace it against a static piece as done in the example, or create a counterweight. [25]
  3. Build the first part of the centrifuge as shown. This will fling the arm which helps to catapult the goal piece. [26]
  4. Add the arm of the centrifuge. Make a triangle from the 3 points marked by the arrows in the example. [27]
  5. Now connect the weight with a chain to the point marked by the arrow, and add a rod to make the weight fall over the edge. [28] If your contraption folds out as the example does, then you should be good.
  6. Finally, add the basket of your choosing to the point marked by the arrow and tweak for the win! [29]

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • The arm isn't long enough!
    • Either raise the arm up higher, or make the basket longer to increase length. A second way is to just throw the ball at an angle like this: [30]

  • It doesn't fold out right!
    • Make sure all the joints are connected correctly and all parts are included.

  • It doesn't have enough power to fling the goal piece the distance I need!
    • The simplest way to fix this is add more weight. Another way could be to change the angle of the basket.

[edit] Hamypults

Credit to Lord_Hamybal for the idea. This is an Unfolding catapult that is used for tossing objects over/around static objects. It can easily be made to go farther than in the examples.

  1. Add a water weight and your basic square-support frame. [40]
  2. Attach two water rods from the bottom corner of your frame, connect one of them to the weight.[41]
  3. Add a thin triangle on the top end of your first water rod from step 2, this acts as your catapult arm Make sure the outward-facing rod is made of wood, obviously. [42]
  4. This step is a bit confusing, first attach a water rod from the top of your weight, to the far-vertex of the catapult arm, Then attach a chain from the center vertex of your catapult arm, to the top of the support frame. Make sure you watch the example and understand it thoroughly. [43]
  5. Last step, All you have to do is add a little hook at the end of your catapult arm, to prevent the object-to-be-tossed from rolling out. [44]

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • The catapult arm is folding downward like this: [45]
    • Simple fix, all you need to do is raise the entire catapult arm upward, so the left vertex of the arm braces up against the ceiling. You can also try adding a little stick to hold it up, like i did in the final step.

[edit] Afro Armpults

Authored by Afronanny. These are catapults that slide out to the side before catapulting the object. Useful for when you need to catapult something over a ceiling. Similar to the Hamypult; it is simpler, however, it doesn't have the potential to go as far.

  1. Make a box, with the two vertical sides as wood rods. [50]
  2. Add a pair of wood rods, one shorter than the other, on top of the box [51]
  3. Make a weight, and a chain that attaches the weight to the shorter rod. [52]
  4. Move the object to be thrown on top of the longer arm, and tweak to perfection. You may need to add a stopper to prevent the ball from moving back, or an angled rod to direct the trajectory. [53]

[edit] Troubleshooting

  • The object doesn't move outwards with the arm.
    • Add a stopper to prevent backwards movement relative to the arm.

  • The arm doesn't move out far enough.
    • Lengthen the arm on the connected joint so the overall arm length is greater. [54]

  • The arm moves too far out, and doesn't have enough leverage to catapult the object.
    • Move the joint the chain is connected to farther away from the first fulcrum, so it doesn't go out as far.
    • Delete some rods from the weight or make it shorter.
    • Adjust the second fulcrum so that the arm has leverage to toss the item.

Please note the difference: [55]
